Our Education Program Manager Kristen has been planting native shrubs with the South Albany HS Environmental Club along Periwinkle Creek at Periwinkle Park.
West Albany HS Environmental Club recently commenced the planting at Bowman with the two groups working upstream towards each other, enhancing the habitat of the creek along the way!
Periwinkle Creek runs through the City of Albany, and joins the Willamette River at Bowman Park. This creek has historically been home to many native species, with juvenile salmonids still occupying the confluence area occasionally.
The creek is currently not suitable habitat due to high water temperatures, erosion, and other pollutants that enter the creek via roads and other impervious surfaces.
The work these students are doing will start to enhance the water quality of the creek while providing habitat for native species!
